The award was presented Tuesday, April 28, recognizing Thew's sustained contributions to civil engineering education, professional practice and mentorship.

Thew, a Clarkson alumnus from the Class of 1963, began teaching at the university in 1966 and has remained a fixture in the classroom for nearly 60 years. Over the decades, he has taught generations of students in construction-focused courses, earning a reputation for rigorous instruction delivered through storytelling and real-world experience.

"Your dedication to Clarkson, ASCE, and civil engineering is unrivaled," said Nathan McLean, president of the ASCE Syracuse Section and a former student, during the award presentation. McLean credited Thew's teaching style and mentorship with shaping his own career and influencing countless engineers.

Thew earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Clarkson in 1963 and later completed a master's degree in the field while teaching. In addition to his academic career, he founded Atlantic Testing Laboratories, Limited in 1966 and Thew Associates, Land Surveyors in 1968, contributing extensively to the construction and engineering communities.

He has also played a significant role in advancing the profession through standards development and service, including leadership within ASTM committees and active involvement in ASCE, and several other professional societies. His work has influenced industry manuals, practices and the training of professionals nationwide.

At Clarkson, Thew was named the inaugural director of the Construction Engineering Management program in 2012 and was later designated a Distinguished Service Professor. His impact extends well beyond the classroom as a mentor to thousands of students and professionals worldwide.
The 2025-26 academic year marks approximately his 60th year of teaching and service to Clarkson, underscoring a career defined by dedication to education, industry and community.

The ASCE Syracuse Section's Outstanding Civil Engineer of the Year Award honors individuals who demonstrate leadership, service and lasting contributions to the civil engineering profession.
