Statement from Chairman Aguilar on Retirement Announcement of Congressman Steny Hoyer

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released the following statement on Congressman Steny Hoyer's announcement that he will not seek another term in the U.S. House of Representatives:

"Congressman Steny Hoyer will be remembered in American history as one of the most dedicated public servants, effective legislators and fierce fighters the House of Representatives has ever seen. For more than four decades in Congress, Steny Hoyer has committed himself to improving the lives of Marylanders and Americans at every turn.

"From creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs, to improving and protecting the Chesapeake Bay and investing in the state's infrastructure and transportation, there is no doubt that Maryland is stronger today because it has been represented by Steny.

"On the national level, Steny's strong record of consensus building and policy prowess has led to some of the most consequential legislative achievements that have shaped and bettered our nation. In just one example of many, as a result of Steny's efforts to pass the landmark Americans With Disabilities Act, millions of disabled Americans are able to achieve independence and enter the workforce.

"In Congress, Steny has been a mentor to me personally and to House Democrats at large. We will miss his leadership on everything from national security to economic development. I, along with the entire House Democratic Caucus, wish Steny and his family the best in this upcoming chapter."
