UC Irvine named a Gilman Program 25th anniversary top producing institution

UC Irvine has been named a "Top Producing Institution" by the U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which provides merit-based scholarships to talented American undergraduate students with high financial need to study or intern abroad for academic credit. This year marks the Gilman Program's 25th anniversary.

The Gilman Program 25th Anniversary Top Producing Institution campaign recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that have supported the most Gilman Scholars from 2001-25. This recognition acknowledges UCI's support of equity, diversity and accessibility in study abroad.

In 2021, The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs had recognized UC Irvine for being a top producer of Gilman Scholars in the previous 20 years for the large institution category. UC Irvine has produced 248 Gilman Scholars since 2001.

Throughout its 25-year history, the Gilman Program has reshaped study abroad to make it more accessible and inclusive for students by providing scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduates who might not otherwise participate. The Gilman Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 2001 and is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026.

More than 50,000 Gilman Scholars from all U.S. states, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories have studied or interned in more than 170 countries around the globe, including non-traditional destinations.

The State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, compiles the lists, which are organized by institution size and degree-awarding category.Gilman Program 25th Anniversary Top Producing Institutions was announced at The Forum on Education Abroad annual conference.
