Senator Marshall: Our Founding Fathers Did Not Envision 50 Million Noncitizens

Senator Marshall Joins The Will Cain Show on Fox News

Kansas City, Kansas - U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas), joined The Will Cain Show on Fox News to discuss the Democrats' continuing refusal to work across the aisle to fund the government, birthright citizenship, and the future of the Senate filibuster.

On the Democrats' refusal to fund DHS:

"Right, Will. And the challenge is, as you know, in the Senate, it takes 60 votes to get most anything done. And I think where this conversation is going is to talk about the end of the filibuster - we're in a different world right now, this is not the same world. You know, we're talking about birthright citizenship. I don't think our founding fathers envisioned that we would have 50 million non-citizens in this country. They couldn't envision that it's such a small world that people would be flying here just for having the purpose of a baby. So we can't even get a farm bill done on a bipartisan basis, how in the world are we going to tackle something like immigration?"

On ending the filibuster:

"I would. So yes, I would, and I didn't come about that decision yesterday. Two years ago, I was for keeping it. If you would enshrine the filibuster in the Constitution, especially the talking filibuster, and end the silent filibuster, then I'd be fine with that. But I just want to remind everybody, it was just what, three or four years ago that every senator that's still in office voted to end the filibuster. They're going to end it next chance they get. And I think if that's the case, then we there are some things worth ending the filibuster over. I think voting rights, voting integrity would be one of those types of things that I'd be willing to end it for. And funding the government - we've been incapable of funding the government, obviously. So I think that it is a new day, it is a new world, and the Republicans should be having this discussion. And we are, we are discussing it right now."

"Yeah. And like I said, if we could enshrine the filibuster in the Constitution, and you promise me they won't ever get rid of it, then it makes sense. The filibuster does protect the minority, and we will be in the minority again. And the Senate, in general, protects small states like Kansas as well. So I would just guess, if you would really get a serious poll - there's only 12 of us, 12 Republican senators have come out publicly saying they would entertain ending the filibuster - but I think at least a third of us are still very adamant against it, and I respect them. Look, this is a decision, an issue that I spent as much time thinking about as I did about what college am I going to go to, what medical school am I going to go to, what doctor am I going to become? It's that type of a decision, and I don't think it's black and white."
