Light Up the Sky the 4th of July the Right Way, San José

The Fourth of July is almost here, and with it comes everything we love about summer: backyard barbecues, family gatherings, and the thrill of fireworks lighting up the night. It's one of the most festive times of year, and we want every San José resident to enjoy it to the fullest.

But here's what every neighbor needs to know: all fireworks are illegal in the City of San José. Yes, all of them, including those labeled "safe and sane." When fireworks go wrong, the consequences can be devastating and deadly: structure fires, injuries, and real trauma to families, children, veterans, and pets.

If you witness illegal fireworks activity in your neighborhood, follow these three simple steps:

  • Snap - Take a photo or video of the activity if you can safely do so

  • Report - Complete the online form with as much detail as possible

⚠️ Important: The online reporting form is not for emergencies and does not dispatch officers immediately. If there is an active fire or safety emergency, always call 9-1-1.

Our Code Enforcement Division works in close partnership with the San José Fire (SJFD) and Police Departments to address fireworks violations across the city. While our team handles enforcement actions and citations, SJFD is on the front lines responding to fires and emergencies caused by illegal fireworks. Together, we review every report and take action when sufficient evidence is provided.

There are great ways to enjoy Independence Day without putting your neighborhood at risk. This year, the City of San José is hosting a free community event to mark America's 250th birthday.
