San Antonio - May 29, 2026 - For Carlos Angel Reyes, the Spring 2026 graduation at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) was a day of continued firsts. Reyes is a proud first-generation college graduate from his family and now he is part of the first class of UIW's Doctor of Occupational Therapy program out of the School of Rehabilitation Sciences. From newborn babies to the elderly, this first group of fifteen doctors will provide quality care to their patients, helping them overcome daily challenges.
"It is a privilege to be part of an inaugural group that is helping establish the foundation and legacy of the program. There is a strong sense of pride in contributing to something that will continue to grow and impact future students. I am deeply grateful for the support, mentorship and opportunities provided throughout this journey. This achievement reflects not only individual effort but also the strength and impact of the UIW community."
Reyes says he was inspired to pursue a career as an Occupational Therapist based on the field's holistic and meaningful approach to care. He admired its adaptability to address a variety of patient needs by providing physical, mental, individualized and client-centered care. Wanting to help patients return to activities that give them purpose, Reyes and his fellow graduates are following their call to heal.
"Throughout this journey, my faith has remained a constant source of strength, guidance and purpose, sustaining me through challenges and shaping my growth," says Reyes. "This achievement holds deep meaning as it represents not only personal success, but also the opportunity to open doors for my family and to serve others with compassion, humility and intention."
"As occupational therapists, we have the privilege of walking alongside people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives," added fellow 2026 graduate Kinley Bubela. "That is not something to take lightly. The knowledge we gained in school is important, but our kindness, patience and willingness to truly see our patients will matter just as much."
"I wish more people understood that occupational therapy extends far beyond basic daily tasks," concludes Reyes. "It plays a critical role in promoting independence, supporting mental health and enabling individuals to fully participate in meaningful life roles."
The inaugural graduating class will now move on to prepare for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy exam so they can begin their careers in acute care and rehabilitation.
