LONG BEACH, CA - Today, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) joined city officials and airport leadership at a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of major improvements at Long Beach Airport, made possible by over $24 million in federal funding secured through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This award will expand key parts of the terminal and improve areas to make it easier and more comfortable for passengers to get through the airport.
"As the former Mayor of Long Beach, I know firsthand how important our airport is to the city and our local economy. This federal investment is going to make our world class airport even better," said Congressman Robert Garcia. "These funds will deliver critical upgrades, support local jobs, and create a better experience for every traveler passing through. Long Beach Airport is one of the best in the country, and we're making sure it stays that way."
The project is expected to generate nearly 200 local construction jobs and be completed ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The total overhaul is estimated to cost $37 million, and will include remodeling of gate areas and restrooms, additional seating, charging stations, new garden areas, improved lighting and wayfinding, and more.
Congressman Garcia has always fought to improve our community's transportation infrastructure. As senior Democrat of the House Aviation Subcommittee, Congressman Garcia helped secure this $24 million federal investment through the FAA. In 2024, Congressman Garcia led the Los Angeles County delegation to advocate for funding for Metro's Southeast Gateway Line Project. Congressman Garcia also helped secure over $283 million in federal grant money for the completion of the North Rail Yard Expansion and the South Rail Yard Expansion at the Port of Long Beach, which is estimated to create over 13,000 jobs nationwide. Congressman Garcia led efforts to secure funding for Los Angeles and Long Beach transit systems in preparation for the 2028 Olympics.
