PPB Arrests Armed Suspect in Retail Store After Hours-Long Negotiation

An armed suspect who confronted a security officer in a retail store in East Portland has been arrested following several hours of negotiations.

On Monday, July 21, 2022,at approximately 10:29 a.m., Officers assigned to East Precinct were dispatched to a retail store located in the 9800 Block of Southeast Washington Street on a report of a disturbance with a weapon. Officers were told a subject, armed with a knife and hatchet confronted a security officer and then ran into the store. The security officer was treated by medical at the scene but did not require transport to a hospital.

Police assisted in evacuating the store and officers searched the premises. They located the suspect up in the second story shelving of an area in back where extra inventory is stored. The suspect was armed with a knife.

Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT) officers began negotiations, entering into an active dialogue with the suspect. Eventually, personnel assigned to the Crisis Negotiation Team took over and continued talking with the suspect.

At 4:01p.m., the suspect dropped the knife and was taken into custody. The Major Crimes Team responded to the scene to continue the investigation. The identification of the suspect and charges will be updated when available.
