Local Schools Recognized as Science of Reading Champions

COLUMBUS-State Representative Justin Pizzulli (R-Scioto County) is pleased to announce that four elementary schools located in Adams and Scioto Counties were recently recognized by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as 2026 Science of Reading Champions.

The awards were distributed based on schools' commitment to the Science of Reading to improve student engagement and literacy outcomes. The 2026 Science of Reading Champions from the 90th House District include:

  • North Adams Elementary School (Seaman, Ohio)
  • Peebles Elementary School (Peebles, Ohio)
  • West Union Elementary School (West Union, Ohio)
  • Sciotoville Elementary Academy (Portsmouth, Ohio)

"Literacy education is a critical component of the health and wellbeing of our children," said Pizzulli. "I am proud of these schools in our communities for the work they are doing to set students up for success!"

The Science of Reading is a method used to teach students how to read by focusing on how to sound out and understand words.

In total, 109 schools throughout the state received the 2026 Governor's Science of Reading Champions Award.
