Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center emergency department earns Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center's emergency department has earned the bronze standard Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). The achievement recognizes the department's commitment to providing specialized, high-quality emergency care for older adults.

The ACEP implemented the accreditation program to improve patient outcomes and acknowledge emergency departments that demonstrate excellence in addressing the unique needs of patients age 65 and older through enhanced care processes, staff education and coordination of resources designed specifically for the aging population.

"This accreditation reflects our team's commitment to creating a care experience that is tailored to the unique needs of every patient," said Angela Clarkson, nurse manager of emergency services at Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center. "By working collaboratively across disciplines, we can better address medical, social and functional needs while helping patients maintain their independence and quality of life."

To earn a Level 3 accreditation, emergency departments must demonstrate their ability to provide care that addresses the physical, cognitive and social needs of older adults. The designation highlights Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center's focus on delivering age-friendly care and supporting patients and families with resources that promote safer, more coordinated treatment and recovery. Data from the ACEP shows accredited Geriatric Emergency Departments have a lower admission rate and reduce repeat emergency department visits.

The emergency departments at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center have also received this designation.
