WANO statement on the fifteenth anniversary of Fukushima

Fukushima remains a pivotal lesson that the industry will never forget.

Wednesday 11 March 2026 is the fifteenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami, and the subsequent nuclear power accident in Fukushima, Japan.

Since the accident at Fukushima, the nuclear industry has made positive progress and good developments to maximise safety and reliability worldwide.

Nuclear power plant operators are providing a safe, reliable low-carbon source of electricity to its local communities and nations globally. Nuclear power continues to conduct an important and evolving role in the energy mix, and stations and facilities are delivering continuous improvements that support consistently high performance.

Working with WANO, WANO members have introduced enhanced Performance Monitoring (ePM) to over 400 nuclear power units globally. ePM delivers regular views of plant performance and predictions of key trends, helping members address any gaps to ensure sustainable, high levels of performance.

The industry has also made good progress in building the leadership capability of key personnel at all levels at utilities, stations, and facilities worldwide. Young professionals who were studying nuclear energy or starting their career at the time of Fukushima are now stepping into leadership roles, helping to guide the industry's future direction.

Fukushima remains a pivotal lesson that the industry will never forget. It serves as a reminder that safety is and always will be the top priority for everyone involved in nuclear energy.
