Energy efficiency and sustainability are driving demand and investment in smart building systems.
Building Automation Systems (BAS) can contribute to substantial cost savings by decreasing energy consumption and reducing carbon footprints for commercial properties. Efficient management of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is a pivotal step in substantially reducing building energy use-by as much as 40% with BAS-according to a study by the U.S. General Services Administration. More than 75% of all U.S. commercial buildings are potential candidates for BAS adoption according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Broader net-zero mandates being implemented by federal, state, and local governments, and by private organizations, are accelerating, with the goals to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from buildings. For example, Local Law 97 in New York City, where buildings account for over two-thirds of emissions (11), established carbon caps for buildings over 25,000 square feet. The All-Electric Buildings Act mandate in New York State is phasing out fossil fuel combustion in new buildings, establishing timelines for different building types. Former President Biden's Executive Order 14057 established targets to achieve net-zero emissions buildings by 2045 across new building construction and existing retrofits, including a 50% reduction by 2032.
