There are openings on two volunteer advisory groups that play a big role in Aurora's development

The city of Aurora is now accepting applications from residents who want to serve on the city's Planning and Zoning Commission and the Building Code and Contractor's Appeals and Standards Board.

These two volunteer groups play important roles in how new development and construction takes place across Aurora and help shape the city's future.

The Planning and Zoning Commission provides recommendations to the Aurora City Council on zoning and a wide range of planning- and development-related issues. Members also review site plans and use approvals, unless appealed to the City Council.

The Building Code and Contractors Appeals and Standards Board weighs in on matters pertaining to city building codes and contractor licensing. It also reviews claims of administrative error and has a say in the suspension and/or revocation of contractor licenses.

There are two upcoming vacancies on the Planning and Zoning Commission, each with terms running from Jan. 1, 2027, through Dec. 31, 2029.

To become a member, applicants must be registered electors and residents of Aurora for at least one year immediately preceding the date of their appointment. No member shall hold any paid office or position in the city administration. If any member ceases to be an Aurora resident, membership will terminate immediately.

The Building Code and Contractors Appeals and Standards Board has five vacancies among its six seats. The city is seeking to fill two vacancies with terms that run from July 15, 2025, through July 14, 2028, and three with terms that run from July 15, 2026, through July 14, 2029.

City code dictates that the board must be compromised of one member who qualifies for a commercial building contractor license and has at least five years of experience in the construction industry, one structural design engineer, one architect, one electrical design engineer and two citizens who are not connected with building construction. All applicants must be Aurora residents for at least one year and a registered voter in the city prior to appointment.
