Statement of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lana Zochiou:

Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, met with the Acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity of Libya, Taher Salem Al Baour, today, Wednesday, September 17.

The visit was preceded by Mr. Gerapetritis' visit to Tripoli on July 15, during which the two sides agreed to deepen bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the two Ministers declared the commencement of the process for the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between Greece and Libya. In this context, the first session of the technical committees took place. It was agreed that the next meeting will be held in Tripoli.

The agenda also included strengthening cooperation in the field of migration. On this matter, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed Greece's readiness to continue providing training for Libyan coast guard officers.

The two Ministers exchanged views on further enhancing bilateral relations in the fields of economy, energy, transport and construction.

They also expressed their readiness to establish a direct flight connection between Athens and Tripoli and agreed on the organization of a Greek business delegation to Tripoli this autumn.

Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized the need to respect International Law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and reiterated the Greek and European position regarding the null and void Turkish-Libyan memorandum.

Finally, he referred to Greece's substantial contribution, as an EU member state and an elected member of the UN Security Council, to efforts aimed at achieving a political solution, based on unity, development and stability in Libya.
