Cobb's Board of Commissioners Appoints New Police Chief

October 28 - Cobb County's Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the County Manager's recommendation for the County's next Chief of Police. James D. Ferrell brings 32 years of law enforcement experience to the department's top position, having risen through the ranks in Cobb County and serving as Interim Police Chief since April.

"When I started in this department 29 years ago, I never thought I'd be standing here today," Ferrell told a large crowd gathered in the boardroom. "I would like to thank our Board of Commissioners for taking careful consideration and deliberation in this search. I know it is not an easy choice to choose someone for Chief of Police."

Cobb Public Safety Director Mike Register was an academy instructor when Ferrell first joined the department.

"To see him grow throughout the years to become Chief of Police has been amazing," Director Register said. "They couldn't have made a better choice. I look forward to all he will do."

During a news conference following his swearing-in, Ferrell thanked the men and women in the department for making it "one of the best departments in the state." He said his priorities will be increasing community outreach and strengthening relationships within the department.

"I truly believe connection with the community is the key to success if you want a safer county," Chief Ferrell said. "You have to have open and transparent communication with the people you serve. The more you can do that, the safer our county will be."

Chief Ferrell also said he will work with his team to ensure they have the tools they need, including support for mental and physical wellness as well as opportunities for professional growth. Ferrell noted that the new age of technology makes this "one of the most exciting times in law enforcement."

Ferrell's appointment took effect immediately. He now leads a department of approximately 700 officers and staff.
