G7 Semiconductor Point of Contact group meets in Germany on R&I and supply chain resilience

The G7 Semiconductor Points of Contact group met in Dresden and Berlin under the auspices of the Canadian Presidency of the G7 between 25 and 26 September to advance collaboration on research and innovation and to strengthen supply-chain resilience and security for semiconductors.

The first day featured a Stakeholder Forum with sessions on pre-competitive industrial research and innovation (R&I) in next-generation semiconductor materials and equipment, and on design and manufacturing (front- and back-end). Industrial stakeholders and Research & Technology organisations from all G7 countries and the EU shared insights on key technological and market trends, highlighted challenges, and outlined potential project opportunities and areas for government coordination and support.

On the second day, the Government Forum brought together G7+ delegations to reflect on the stakeholder forum's outcomes, exploring avenues for international R&I collaboration, and discussed the overall group's findings, including recommendations to enhance trustworthiness and security across semiconductor supply chains.

The meeting aimed to deepen cooperation among G7+ governments and industry to address sector challenges and reinforce global semiconductor supply-chain resilience.

Background

Semiconductors underpin modern life, powering the digital economy and innovation across technology, communications, healthcare, and energy efficiency. Reflecting their strategic importance, public-policy attention on the sector has grown in recent years. Established under Italy's G7 Presidency in 2024, the G7 Semiconductor Points of Contact group addresses issues spanning early-stage innovation, crisis coordination, sustainability, and the impacts of government policies and practices. The work of the group was pursued under the Canadian's Presidency of the G7, with a first meeting of the group in Toronto on 3-4 June 2025.
