EU Special Representative for the Gulf Luigi Di Maio visits Kuwait amid rising tensions. He reaffirmed the EU's unwavering support to Kuwait and its condemnation of the Iranian attacks
EU Special Representative for the Gulf' Luigi Di Maio concluded on 30 March an official visit to Kuwait. During the visit, he held high-level meetings with HE Sheikh Jarrah Al Jaber Al Sabah, the Foreign Minister, HE Tariq Al-Roumi, the Minister of Oil, HE Sheikh Abdullah Meshal Al Sabah, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence among others. The primary purpose of his visit was to convey the European Union's concrete support to Kuwait at these exceptional circumstances.
During his meetings in Kuwait, he re-emphasized the EU's unwavering solidarity with Kuwait. Discussions also focused on the unjustified Iranian attacks and the EU's support to Kuwait's right of self-defence. He also discussed the strong historical relations and close strategic partnership between Kuwait and the EU.
Director of the GCC Emergency Management Center Brigadier Dr Rashid Al-Marri also met with EUSR to discuss technical cooperation in crisis management and emergency response. The talks focused on strengthening coordination in areas such as cross-border risk response, capacity building, and cooperation in radiation and nuclear security, as well as handling complex crises.
EUSR Luigi Di Maio met with EU Member States' Ambassadors in Kuwait to address regional tensions and strengthen EU-Kuwait strategic partnership. He also held press interviews with Kuwait Times and Al Qabas newspapers.
EU Ambassador to Kuwait HE Anne Koistinen hailed the timely visit of the EUSR Luigi Di Maio, which showed the EU's unwavering support to Kuwait at this difficult time. She added "Kuwait remains a close and trusted partner to the EU. This visit shows that the security of Kuwait and the EU is deeply interconnected. Kuwait and the EU will continue to work together to ensure long-term regional stability and to uphold international humanitarian law and state sovereignty."
