Smucker Applauds House Passage of SAVE and Protect America Act

WASHINGTON-Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), Vice Chair of the House Budget Committee, spoke in favor of the SAVE and Protect America Act (H.Con.Res. 113) which was approved in the House of Representatives by a vote of 216to 214.

Rep. Smucker spoke in favor of the legislation, remarks as delivered below:

"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I'd like to thank the chairman for yielding, thank him for all of his work on this, what I call a commonsense bill. A simple bill really addressing three priorities that the American people support.

Three priorities that are core functions of government and that are very, very important. Number one, election security. Ensuring that our elections are conducted fairly, they're conducted securely, and that only American citizens are voting.

Voter ID: the American people support that. Eighty, ninety percent of American people support the idea of showing voter ID when you show up to vote. Number two, it begins the process, this is instruction to the committees, of providing our service members with the resources that they need to meet growing threats around the world.

Keeping the American people safe. These individuals who are serving us are putting their lives in harm's way every day. The least we can do is ensure they have the tools and equipment they need to do their jobs and to keep us safe.

And then finally, third point in this bill, ensuring our food supply is secure. Our American farmers work very, very hard every single day to feed America and really feed the world. They've had some tough times and this provides the help they need at this time to ensure that they can continue to feed America.

Unfortunately, every Democrat on the House Budget Committee voted against these common sense provisions in this resolution. The American people sent us here to deliver, they sent us here to deliver on these priorities. It's a great bill, I urge my colleagues to support the Save and Protect America Act as it moves through the House.
