The ASECG II project will make it possible to safely store the fuel elements used at the Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant once they complete their cycle in the reactor, in line with international standards for spent nuclear fuel management.

We continue to develop the ASECG II project (Dry Storage of Spent Fuel Elements), key infrastructure to support the long-term operation of the Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant.
The facility will allow the safe storage of used fuel elements once they complete their cycle in the reactor. This system is a widely adopted solution worldwide for managing spent nuclear fuel, and it complements the initial storage that takes place in the plant's decay pools.
The project was designed by Nucleoeléctrica specialists and involves building a facility conceived specifically to ensure suitable storage conditions, under strict safety and environmental protection standards.
During the operation of a nuclear power plant, used fuel elements are removed from the reactor and stored initially in decay pools, where they remain for a set period. Dry storage then offers a safe, reliable alternative for managing them over the long term, and is used by nuclear operators around the world.
The development of ASECG II is a fundamental step in securing the continued operation of Atucha II and strengthening the strategic infrastructure of the Argentine nuclear sector. It also shows the technical and engineering capabilities Nucleoeléctrica has developed to respond to complex challenges tied to the operation of its facilities.
