Sojourn 250 Flag at USW Headquarters

A historic U.S. flag made a stop at USW headquarters on July 1 as part of the National Flag Foundation's "Flag Sojourn 250."

Before its arrival in Pittsburgh, the flag was on a yearlong journey to 26 overseas U.S. military cemeteries and 10 countries as well as every U.S. territory and state, closing with the 13 original colonies and ending in Washington, D.C., on July 4.

The USW has partnered with organizers at the National Flag Foundation - also headquartered in Pittsburgh - for several events in recent years, including the 2022 "Light to Unite" celebration marking the 240th anniversary of the Purple Heart.

This year, in addition to flying over the USW's headquarters, the flag made several stops meant to honor the contributions of American workers, including at the nearby Carrie Blast Furnace historic landmark, part of what once was U.S. Steel's Homestead Works.

International President Roxanne Brown said the union was honored to be among the final stops on the Flag Sojourn 250 tour.

"Our flag is a powerful symbol of unity - a founding principle of our nation and a core value of the American labor movement," Brown said. "The USW is proud to honor the dedication and sacrifice of the millions of working people who built this nation, as well as those who continue to devote their working lives to moving our nation forward for the next 250 years."
