MELBOURNE (June 16, 2026) - AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced it has been appointed as lead engineering consultant alongside its partners Architectus Australia, Foster + Partners and MANICA, who are the lead architects. AECOM will support the redevelopment business case to ensure the MCG stadium and precinct maintains its world-class status into the future.
AECOM will support the review of the current state of the MCG, including the ageing Shane Warne Stand, and outline options for a potential future redevelopment that meets the contemporary requirements of athletes, broadcasters and fans. AECOM will be supported by subconsultants schlaich bergermann partner, Introba, AECOM Hunt, Laing O'Rourke, Agonis and PMY Group.
"This is a once-in-a-generation, city-shaping project - one our team is proud to be a part of," said Mark McManamny, AECOM's chief executive of Australia and New Zealand. "As sports fans, MCC and AFL members, club supporters and lifelong MCG attendees, this project is personal to us. The MCG is a global cultural icon that deserves the care and attention of Melbourne's best talent, alongside leading stadium designers from around the world. From Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to SoFi Stadium and Everton Football Club Stadium, the team we've brought together has helped deliver some of the world's most iconic sporting venues and will help define the MCG's next chapter."
The team's core priority will be determining how the MCG can remain operational during any potential future redevelopment, so Melburnians and visitors can continue to enjoy their year-long events calendar, from AFL to cricket and concerts. The business case will explore how to uphold the MCG's cultural, civic and heritage significance while delivering a legacy venue with improved amenity, accessibility, inclusivity, and athlete and fan experience.
"Being part of this next chapter of the 'G is a privilege," said Jochen Ristig, market director for sports, culture and entertainment in Australia and New Zealand. "We're Melbourne engineers who understand the significance of this iconic stadium. We're committed to protecting its standing as, in our opinion, the greatest stadium on earth. Our multidisciplinary team across engineering, technology and construction will bring clear staging, risk, cost and constructability thinking to the project. At the same time, our sustainability and circularity specialists will ensure environmental performance - from material reuse to water and energy efficiency and climate resilience - is embedded as a fundamental design driver."
AECOM builds on its history of helping to bring iconic Melbourne buildings and places to life, including the Albert Park Pit Building, Melbourne Park and Melbourne Airport T2 and T3.
