Update: Lake Hollingsworth Water Sampling Results Received

Lakeland, FL (May 19, 2026)
- Today, the City of Lakeland received water sample analysis results regarding last week's fish kill at Lake Hollingsworth. Results show unidentified filamentous cyanobacteria, a type of blue-green algae, may have contributed to lower overnight oxygen levels in the lake.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staff believe multiple environmental factors, including spawning stress, fluctuating dissolved oxygen, and recent rainfall which can influence temperature, likely contributed to last week's gizzard shad fish kill.
The City of Lakeland's Public Works Department reported no additional fish mortalities during this morning's Lake Hollingsworth inspection.
