Dallas Fire Rescue Urges Residents to Check Their Smoke Alarms as Part of National Fire Prevention Week

DALLAS - Dallas Fire Rescue Department is proud to partner with the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, to promote National Fire Prevention Week, which is October 6-12, 2024. This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!" The campaign works to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

Smoke alarms save lives by reducing the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent), according to NFPA. Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Dallas Fire Rescue offers free smoke alarms and installation to Dallas homeowners. If a resident is a renter, DFR will notify the owner/management to provide this resource to the resident. To request a smoke alarm, Dallas residents can call 214-670-7016 or 3-1-1.

The public is invited to a Fire Safety Education & Health Fair hosted by Dallas Fire Rescue on October 12, 2024, from 10 a.m. to Noon at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center at 5150 Mark Trail Way, Dallas, TX, 75232.

Residents can sign up for free smoke detectors and a free home safety inspection. "Sparky" the Fire Dog and the Dallas Fire Rescue Safety House will be on site, as well as fire trucks, bounce houses, free food, drinks, prizes, music and more.

"Smoke alarms serve as the first line of defense in a home fire, but they need to be working in order to protect people," said Interim Fire Chief Justin Ball. "Dallas Fire Rescue knows the importance of educating the public about simple but critical steps they can take to make sure their homes have working smoke alarms that can help keep their families safe."

Dallas Fire Rescue Department offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
