WILMINGTON - On Tuesday, September 16, Governor Matt Meyer signed House Bill 250 to create a new background special license plate that commemorates the 250th anniversary of Separation Day and American independence. The Governor signed the bill at the New Castle Court House Museum, which was the state capitol at the time of Separation Day and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
"Next year, we'll celebrate two 250-year milestones: the birth of our nation and Delaware's place as one of the original 13 states," said Governor Matt Meyer. "These anniversaries remind us of the courage and vision that shaped our country, and they challenge us to keep building a stronger future for every family. And in true Delaware fashion, we're celebrating with a tradition all our own: a special license plate that lets us carry our history and patriotism wherever we go."
House Bill 250 is sponsored by Representative Eric Morrison and Senator Stephanie Hansen.
"As the first state, Delaware holds a unique and important place in our nation's founding and history. With this license plate, we're honoring that history in a way people will see every day on our roads," said Rep. Eric Morrison. "And what makes this new license plate even more meaningful is that its proceeds will go towards parades, programs, and events that will bring Delawareans together to celebrate this milestone we'll only see once in our lifetimes."
"We have never been a perfect nation. This week, more than ever, I am reminded that throughout our entire history, the American people have endured hardships and disputes that have seemed insurmountable at the time," said Sen. Stephanie Hansen. "But one thing has always remained true: our nation has withstood nearly 250 years because the American people are resilient and because optimism is an intrinsically American value."
The Division of Motor Vehicles will begin accepting applications for the plate on September 22. There is a $50 cost associated with the tag, $15 of which goes to the DMV to cover the cost of production. The other $35 goes to the DE 250 organization, Delaware's official undertaking in commemoration of the United States' semiquincentennial.
