Trump’s Bragging About Puny Refunds That Won’t Come Close to Making Up for Rising Costs Under His Term Arrow

Surveys show the largest share of Americans plan to use their refund to pay down debt

As Donald Trump continues to wage his unpopular war of choice with Iran - which has already claimed the lives of at least 13 American service members and injured more than 350 - the economy back home is tanking. As Americans grow increasingly concerned about the economy, Trump is trying to avoid backlash by bragging about tax refunds, repeatedly claiming people are "receiving larger refunds than they ever thought possible, they are getting so much more money."

In reality, Trump's tariffs are costing the average family $2,500 per year, more than 7 times the size of the average refund increase of $351 per household so far this year. Surveys show the largest share of Americans plan to use their refund to pay down debt as they continue to struggle under Trump's higher prices. Most Americans don't think their tax bill or tax refund will change much this year, and one-third don't expect a tax refund at all.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

"Donald Trump promised to lower costs on 'Day One,' but his deadly and costly war with Iran has sent prices soaring even higher, leaving working families feeling squeezed. Trump is trying to dodge responsibility by bragging about tax refunds, but those won't even come close to making up for the skyrocketing prices since he's taken office. In fact, Americans will be using their refunds to pay down debt just to scrape by in Trump's economy - while billionaires and big corporations cash in."
