Washington Park Land Sale Would Support Memorial for Torture Victims

A memorial honoring victims of police torture would be constructed in Washington Park through a City land sale proposed to City Council by Mayor Brandon Johnson today.

Chicago Torture Justice Memorials Foundation would acquire four lots at 5520-38 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive for $1 per lot. The land, valued at $234,481, would be used to memorialize survivors of torture committed under the command of former Chicago Police Department officer Jon Burge.

Plans for the $4.7 million project include a 22-foot-tall memorial structure, landscaping, open space, seating and lighting. The project's lead designers are JAQ Corp and Greenprint Partners.
