WASHINGTON D.C. - On Thursday, Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) joined his Republican colleagues in voting for H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This is a vital measure to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that only American citizens are casting ballots in federal elections.
"The SAVE Act is straightforward: Americans vote in American elections, period," said Congressman Haridopolos. "American citizenship is an honor, something that you earn or are blessed to be born into. It's common sense that only Americans should vote in American elections. The SAVE Act reinforces this fundamental idea by ensuring that illegal immigrants-who have already broken the law by entering the country unlawfully-are not able to vote in our elections."
Millions of illegal immigrants have entered the United States over the past four years. In many states, illegal aliens are eligible for driver's licenses providing opportunities to illegally register to vote in federal elections. While only American citizens can legally vote in Federal elections, federal law has often overridden or weakened state efforts to enforce citizenship verification for voter registration.
The SAVE Act will protect American elections by requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship in person before registering an individual to vote for a federal election and requiring states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls.
