Redwood City, California - Redwood City is proud to announce a significant milestone with the award of a $105 million federal grant from the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program. This announcement follows the San Mateo County Transportation Authority's (SMCTA) recent allocation of $105 million to the project, bringing total funding secured to $264 million of the estimated $370 million project cost.

"The $105 million INFRA grant is a pivotal achievement for Redwood City, highlighting the strength of our partnerships and our collective commitment to enhancing critical infrastructure," said Redwood City Mayor Jeff Gee. "We are especially thankful for the leadership of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin, and the collaboration of Caltrans, the SMCTA, and our other partners. This grant brings us one step closer to delivering transformative infrastructure that will benefit residents, businesses, and commuters for generations to come."

Project Scope and Benefits

The SR84-US101 Interchange Reimagined project will address operational challenges caused by outdated design and heavy congestion, which contributed to 195 collisions between 2018 and 2022. Key upgrades include:

  • Safety Improvements: Reconfiguring ramps and intersections to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow.
  • New Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities: Over 4.2 miles of new bike lanes and pedestrian paths to provide continuous connections to the Bay Trail and local networks.
  • Veterans Boulevard Flyover: Flyover ramps will alleviate congestion and improve truck access to the Port of Redwood City.
  • Environmental and Community Benefits: Reducing emissions by 75% and prioritizing equitable access for disadvantaged communities.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

The project will enhance access to key employment hubs, including the Port of Redwood City, Seaport Center, and Pacific Shores business parks. It is expected to create 3,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase while improving connections to major employers such as Google, Meta, and Stanford Medical Center.

Environmental Justice and Multimodal Connectivity

The project aligns with the Justice40 Initiative by prioritizing improvements for historically disadvantaged communities. New bike lanes, safer pedestrian crossings, and enhanced public transit access will promote mobility for all residents, reduce emissions, and enhance quality of life.

Support from Federal and Regional Leaders

Redwood City recognizes the invaluable contributions of Senator Padilla and Representative Mullin in securing federal funds that complement local investments. Their advocacy has been instrumental in ensuring that projects like the SR84-US101 Interchange benefit from federal highway improvements across the Bay Area, promoting both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Additional appreciation is extended to Congressmember Eshoo and former Congressmember Speier their steadfast commitment to this project. An earlier earmark, championed by Congressmember Speier, laid the foundation for the progress celebrated today, advancing both regional connectivity and environmental sustainability.

Project Timeline

The project is currently in the Right of Way (ROW) acquisition and final design phase, with property owners receiving market-based offers for necessary land acquisitions. Pending full funding, construction is expected to begin in 2027, with completion anticipated by 2030.
