Construction Advisory: Decoto Road Trackwork - Temporary Closure June 14-16

Union Pacific Railroad (UP) will be conducting trackwork on Decoto Road beginning Saturday, June 14 through Monday, June 16, 2025. During this period, Decoto Road will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic from the intersection of Decoto Road and Meyers Drive/Union Square to the intersection of Decoto Road and 11th Street. This closure is necessary to allow Union Pacific Railroad to replace the concrete panels at the at-grade crossing.

Residents will be able to use all roadways located north of the closure, such as those in the Decoto District and off 11th Street. However, traffic will not be able to go south from these streets due to the full closure at the railroad tracks near the BART overhead structure.

Neighboring shopping centers on Decoto Road up to Meyers Drive/Union Square will remain accessible from the south. However, customers are encouraged to use Alvarado-Niles Road to access these businesses.

What to Expect:

  • Decoto Road will be closed between Meyers Drive/Union Square and 11th Street from 8:00 AM on Saturday, June 14 until 5:00 PM on Monday, June 16.
  • Roadway closure needed for this construction will affect daily travel. Motorists are advised to follow posted detour signs and to allow additional time for travel.
  • Expect lane closures, minor traffic delays, and detours including local detours when necessary.
  • Portable changeable message signs have been placed prior to closure advising motorists of the closure and will remain in effect throughout the weekend while work is being performed.
  • Construction activities should not change scheduled dates for delivery or pick-up services (garbage collection, mail, etc.). Although delivery times may change, dates will not be affected. Residents will be notified of any exceptions.

Motorists are highly encouraged to avoid this segment of Decoto Road and to instead take alternative routes to alleviate traffic congestion within the area. The City is aware that the closures will impact the public and measures are being taken to minimize inconvenience.

Detour Options (for Motorists along Mission Boulevard and Alvarado-Niles Road):

  1. Motorists heading in the east-bound direction (coming from I-880 on Alvarado-Niles Road) should detour via Central Avenue to Whipple Road to Mission Boulevard to Decoto Road.
  2. Motorists heading in the west-bound direction (coming from Mission Boulevard in Fremont) should detour via Whipple Road to Central Avenue to Alvarado-Niles Road to Decoto Road.
  3. Motorists heading in the west-bound direction on Alvarado-Niles Road from east of Decoto Road should detour via Central Avenue to Whipple Road to Mission Boulevard to Decoto Road.
  4. Motorists heading in the north-bound direction on Decoto Road should make a left-turn onto Alvarado-Niles Road and proceed to Central Avenue to Whipple Road to Mission Boulevard to Decoto Road.

This work is a key component of the At-Grade Pedestrian Crossing at BART Project (BART East Entrance), which will open a second entrance into the BART Station. This UP work aims to improve safety and accessibility at the existing at-grade railroad crossing along the Oakland Subdivision rail line.
