Council Supports Programs Creating Opportunities for Boston’s Young People

Programs that support children, families, and young adults can help create pathways to stability, education, and opportunity. During this week's Council meeting, the Council adopted resolutions supporting Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Boston and recognizing Quality Homes for Humankind, a nonprofit founded by students at Tech Boston Academy.

Head Start and Early Head Start are federal grant programs that provide comprehensive healthcare, nutrition, and family support and services to low-income youth, those at risk of homelessness, and other vulnerable populations. Each year, Head Start programs serve about 100,000 children and families across Massachusetts, including Boston. The Council's resolution supports Head Start programs and their standards for teaching, learning, health, and the welfare of children and families, and encourages Boston residents to provide public comment in support of retaining these quality standards and supports.

The Council also recognized Quality Homes for Humankind, which was founded in 2025 by students at Tech Boston Academy with a mission of combining workforce development and transitional housing for former Boston students ages 19-24 facing housing and employment challenges. The organization was created after students studied gun violence in Dorchester as part of an Aspen Challenge presentation and identified housing and financial insecurity as root causes of violence. Since then, Quality Homes for Humankind has convened meetings with stakeholders, hosted a career fair at Tech Boston, secured funding from the Trefler Foundation and the Boston Foundation, and established partnerships to support HVAC and culinary training programs.

By adopting these resolutions, the Council reaffirmed its support for Head Start and Early Head Start programs and their quality standards, while also recognizing Quality Homes for Humankind, its mission, and the work it will soon accomplish.
