UIW Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2025

Every year from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month. This time is dedicated to acknowledging how the Hispanic and Latino community's history, culture and contributions have shaped and continue to shape the nation. During this time, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has planned a variety of engaging events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Each event will offer "opportunities for the community to embrace the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic and Latino cultures on UIW campuses" (uiw.edu).

"Faith, truth and education are cornerstones of the UIW Mission and values that resonate deeply with Hispanic heritage," stated Victoria Shipley, Hispanic Heritage Month board chair. "This month, we honor a legacy of perseverance and passion that shapes our community."

On Monday, Sept. 15, the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library unveiled their new book display in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The UIW community was invited to view and explore the specially curated selection of books that honor Hispanic and Latino authors and explore the community's unique history and ongoing legacy.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Broadway campus kicked off its celebration with a variety of fun events! Campus Engagement and International Students and Scholar Services invited students to ¡Independencia!, a celebration of Latin American independence days and cultures, hosted in Westgate Circle. Students were able to buy merchandise and tasty treats sold by local small businesses and vendors at the event's mercado. Additionally, talented musicians and dancers performed at the Student Engagement Center patio, showcasing vibrant expressions of cultural pride.

On the same day, the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability (ECCLS), in collaboration with Student Government Association, invited students to become registered voters at their National Voter Registration Day BBQ hosted on Dubuis Lawn. Ettling Center members cooked delicious hotdogs and sausages for students to enjoy while they registered voters, encouraging them to practice their civic right and contribute towards local and national democratic decisions.

"Through campus events, conversations and shared experiences, we come together to listen, learn, reflect and celebrate the diverse stories that continue to shape our University and our world," expressed ECCLS.

The week's event concluded on Thursday, Sept. 18 in the Student Engagement Center ballroom with Loteria Night. Students played the popular traditional board game as a campus community, cheering and laughing as they played for the chance to win prizes.
