Grant Support Approved for Washington Park Dance Studio and Event Space

The planned construction of an international hub for professional Black dance in Washington Park will be facilitated through a $10.5 million Community Development Grant approved by City Council today.
Plans for the $20.9 million Deeply Rooted Dance Center at 5339 S. State St. include a 33,270-square-foot building with six dance studios, a performance venue, event space and a rooftop garden.
Grant funding will be provided through the Housing and Economic Development Bond. A City land write-down for the .54-acre site was approved by City Council in 2023.
The project is being led by Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, founded in 1996 as a performance and education troupe.
