UPDATES ON MALAYSIANS AFFECTED BY FLOODS AND LANDSLIDES IN SUMATRA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Medan, continues to monitor developments following the severe floods and landslides that struck parts of Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra from 27 November 2025. Search and rescue (SAR) and recovery operations remain ongoing, with access to several affected areas gradually improving.

Indonesian authorities have begun reopening certain inland access routes, enabling the more orderly delivery of essential supplies, including food, medicine, and basic necessities. Efforts to restore major road links are also underway, with local authorities targeting the completion of repairs to key routes by mid-December to facilitate wider recovery work.

SAR operations to locate the Malaysian citizen who was reported missing in a landslide in Padang Panjang have entered their seventh day. Search efforts continue along riverbanks and landslide zones near Jambatan Kembar. The Consulate General remains in close coordination with Indonesian authorities and continues to provide support to the family, who are currently assisting local officials with necessary identification procedures.

Separately, the three Malaysians, aged between 63 and 64 years old, who had been uncontactable since 27 November, have now been safely located and evacuated from an area that had been cut off due to flooding. They were flown by the Indonesian Air Force from Rembele Airport, Takengon, to Medan, and arrived at Kualanamu Airport yesterday evening. The Consulate General is arranging their return to Malaysia as soon as possible.

However, one Malaysian woman, aged 64, remains uncontactable. Efforts to trace her whereabouts are ongoing, with the Consulate General working closely with local authorities and community networks. Malaysians with information that may assist in establishing her location are urged to contact the Consulate General immediately.

The Ministry continues to advise Malaysians in affected regions to remain vigilant, monitor local weather forecasts, and follow the instructions of Indonesian authorities. Malaysians travelling in the region are strongly encouraged to register with the nearest Malaysian mission to ensure timely communication and assistance. Families in Malaysia who are unable to contact their relatives in the affected areas are strongly urged to reach out to the Consulate General of Malaysia in Medan for assistance.
