RALEIGH - Campbell Law School is once again hosting two Justice John Paul Stevens Fellows for the third year during the summer of 2026. Campbell Law is only the second law school in North Carolina to host the public interest fellowship.

The school will administer two $5,000 stipends to second-year student Jordan Gilchrist '27 and first-year student Madeline Evans '28 during the summer of 2026 with the generous support of Campbell Law alumnus Charlie Rawls '82 and his wife, Deanne Maynard, along with a matching grant from the law school.

Gilchrist is a 2024 graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science. She serves as co-director of the Peer Mentorship Program at Campbell Law, and will spend her summer at the Office of the Public Defender - Eastern District of North Carolina in Raleigh.

Evans is a 2025 graduate of North Carolina State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and Spanish language and literature. She has completed two legal internships so far, and will spend her summer working for the Johnston County Public Defender's Office.

"It is an amazing opportunity to support our students who wish to make a direct impact in our communities in North Carolina and fuel their journeys in the public interest," said Mallory Underwood, assistant dean of Career and Professional Development.

The John Paul Stevens Foundation, founded as a living legacy to the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, is dedicated to promoting public interest and social justice values in the next generation of American lawyers, according to the website.

"The Foundation oversees the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship, which reflects Justice Stevens' deep belief that a dynamic and effective justice system depends on a cadre of trained and committed lawyers doing public interest work," states the website.
