South Dakota Department of Health Updates Fish Consumption Advisory Listing

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) has updated its online Fish Consumption Advisory list to include Lake Louise (Hand County) for Largemouth Bass following a recent review of sampling data. The advisory map and website now reflect the most current and complete information available to help South Dakotans make informed decisions when consuming locally caught fish.

"We encourage South Dakotans to regularly check our website for the most up-to-date fish consumption guidance," said Secretary Melissa Magstadt. "These updates help ensure individuals and families have the information they need to make safe and informed choices."

Every year since 1996, the department has released the current mercury determination for the lakes. Fish are an important part of a healthy diet, providing nutrients that support heart and brain health. For many years, the South Dakota Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Game, Fish and Parks have worked together to monitor fish across the state and share guidance to help people safely enjoy the benefits of eating fish while minimizing exposure to contaminants.

At the heart of the Department of Health's mission is a simple goal: to protect and improve the health of all South Dakotans. The department is entrusted with the vital task of promoting wellness, preventing disease, and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all South Dakotans.
