New playgrounds bring joy to children at Tower Barracks

TOWER BARRACKS, Germany - U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria celebrated the opening of two newly renovated playgrounds, located at Buildings 271 and 272 at Tower Barracks Sept. 10, 2026, giving children across the community welcoming new spaces for play and physical activity.

Following a playground inspection in January last year, the project team developed a plan to transform both locations into modern, inclusive and safe recreational spaces for military Families at Tower Barracks.

The project, valued at about 2.2 million euros, was awarded in late 2025, and construction began in March 2026. The playgrounds were completed nearly six months ahead of schedule.

A ceremonial ribbon-cutting marked the occasion, with three children from the community joining garrison leaders to officially open the playgrounds.

Project leaders said the renovation reflects a thoughtful design approach centered on community needs. By combining equipment for toddlers ages 2 to 5 and children ages 5 to 12, Families with multiple children can now enjoy a single, shared space. The former standalone basketball court has also been replaced with a multi-use game area that supports basketball, volleyball and soccer within a fully enclosed and safer environment.

"Our DPW team is committed to delivering high-quality facilities that directly support the daily lives of our Soldiers and Families," said Lt. Col. Tyandre Ellis, director of Public Works. "Seeing these playgrounds completed under budget, ahead of schedule, and built to modern, inclusive standards is something we're truly proud of. It's our mission to ensure the community has safe, durable spaces to enjoy for years to come."

The celebration continued as leaders thanked the teams involved for their work and highlighted the positive impact the new play areas will have on Families across Tower Barracks.

"The garrison team has done a phenomenal job working their way through this," said Brig. Gen. Terry R. Tillis. "We're excited to get this park open. It is a really great opportunity for our Families and our little ones to get out there and play. It's a safe place to come."

After the ribbon-cutting, children from the community immediately began exploring the new playgrounds, running, climbing and playing on the newly opened equipment.
