Board Approves Plan to Address Environmental Hazards at the Courthouse

The Walker County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a $168,743 plan to contain and remediate environmental hazards at the Walker County Courthouse. The issues came to light while representatives with Gordian were walking the courthouse during a meeting to discuss some potential interior renovations.

Those conversations were put on hold until environmental testing and structural reviews could be conducted. "Once we received those results, we did notice there is mold, asbestos, and lead based paint throughout the courthouse," said Kayla Johnson, Gordian. "There are four active areas of mold that we are looking to contain and remediate immediately before proceeding with any other additional work."

The areas of concern include the staircases and landings on both sides of the 4th floor, office 318, and the attic. The clean-up plan covers everything but the attic, which will be included in a separate proposal to address concerns with the roof.

The project is expected to take several months to complete.
