Louisiana Department of Insurance Offers Policyholder Guidance Following Tropical Storm Arthur

The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) reminds residents to review their insurance coverage if they experienced flood, tornado or other wind damage to insured property from Tropical Storm Arthur.

"If you need to file a claim, contact your insurer first," Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said. "Make sure you hire reputable contractors during the recovery process and be wary of anyone you did not contact offering to do work on your home."

The LDI offers the following tips on storm damage claims:

  • Flood Claims. Flooding is not covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. Most flood policies are written through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but some people do have flood policies outside of the NFIP. If you do have flood coverage, contact your flood insurance agent or insurer to discuss filing a claim. If you have an NFIP policy and do not know how to reach your agent, you can find your flood insurance provider and relevant information by contacting the NFIP at floodsmart.gov or 800-621-3362.

  • Claim Process. If your insured property is damaged, contact your insurer first to file a claim. If possible, have your policy number and an initial assessment of the damage ready, and make sure your insurance company knows how to contact you. Take photos of the damage before cleaning up, and don't throw away damaged items. You have an obligation to mitigate further damage by making temporary repairs like putting a tarp over a damaged roof or boarding up a broken window. Keep your receipts for these expenses.

  • Vehicle Flooding. If you have comprehensive coverage through your auto insurance policy, your vehicle should be covered for flood and water damage.

  • Avoid Contractor Fraud. Bad actors may attempt to take advantage of storm victims as they recover and rebuild. Some of these practices include unlicensed individuals posing as contractors or inspectors, fake solicitations for disaster donations, and false offers of state or federal aid. These scam attempts can be made by phone call, text, email, postal mail or door-to-door. When an adjuster or contractor visits your property, ask for license and identification. You can very adjuster licensure with the LDI at 1-800-259-5300 or our website. Contractor licensure can be verified with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.
