The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Edmondo Cirielli, co-chaired the Italy-Armenia political consultations at the Farnesina with his counterpart, Vahan Kostanyan.
The meeting reviewed bilateral relations with Yerevan in the broader context of Italy's commitment to the stabilisation of the South Caucasus. It followed the meeting between Presidents Mattarella and Khachaturyan in Rome in July 2023 and subsequent Foreign Minister- and Deputy Foreign Minister-level discussions during 2024.
The Deputy Minister underlined the importance of Armenia pursuing the peace process initiated with Azerbaijan, with which Italy maintains an ongoing dialogue at all levels, as well as consolidating its relations with the European Union. On the economic front, both delegations highlighted the need to further strengthen bilateral trade, which reached over EUR 415 million in 2024, and to explore additional opportunities for cooperation in infrastructure connectivity, particularly in the railway sector, opened up by the Washington Summit. Finally, the consultations addressed cultural cooperation and development assistance, with Armenia identified among Italy's priority partner countries.
