South Dakota's Growing Economy Delivers Strong Revenue Growth

PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden and the Bureau of Finance and Management (BFM) announced strong April revenue numbers, which are driven by South Dakota's growing economy. April's revenue numbers outpaced legislative adopted estimates by $12.1 million and represent a 12.7% year-over-year growth in sales tax.

"South Dakota's economy is strong because our people are free!" said Governor Larry Rhoden. "These numbers represent tremendous growth, keeping South Dakota Open for Opportunity for businesses and families."

South Dakota's unemployment rate in March 2026 was 2.3%, the lowest in the nation. Our GDP, which is the most comprehensive measure of an economy, grew 3.0% in the most recent quarter of 2025, which is the 2nd fastest growth in the nation.

"Strong growth across our key industries continues to drive higher revenues," said BFM Commissioner Jim Terwilliger. "April's strong revenue performance reflects the stability of our state economy and the fiscal responsibility that continues to position South Dakota for long-term success."
