DOH CLOSES MANUELA MALASADAS FOR MULTIPLE FOOD SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Posted on Jul 10, 2025 in Newsroom

KAHUKU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) has issued a red placard and immediately shut down Manuela Malasadas, located at 56-565 Kamehameha Highway, due to a lack of running water for handwashing.

The food establishment, operated by Manuela Malasadas Co. LLC, received the red placard on July 10, 2025, and must remain closed until DOH conducts a follow-up inspection and all violations are resolved.

During a routine inspection conducted on July 10, 2025, the DOH inspector noted the following critical violations:

  • No running water, rendering the handwash and sinks inoperable
  • One-door reach-in refrigerator for not holding proper temperature (air temperature recorded at 70°F)
  • Improper use and storage of pesticides

DOH is requiring the food establishment to take the following corrective actions before it can reopen:

  • Sinks must have running water available at all times during operation
  • Refrigeration units must maintain temperature control for safety (TCS) foods at 41°F or below
  • Pesticides must be properly stored to prevent food contamination

The next follow-up inspection is scheduled for July 11, 2025.

The DOH Food Safety Branch protects and promotes the health of Hawaiʻi residents and visitors through education and the regulation of food establishments statewide. The branch conducts routine health inspections of facilities where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed or sold.
