The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, spoke at the high-level event on Climate Action in preparation for the upcoming COP30 in Belém (Brazil), which was held at the United Nations headquarters. The event, organised by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together heads of state and government to discuss the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the action plans that each country submits to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change, helping to limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

The head of the Government of Spain warned of the urgency of redoubling efforts to deal with the climate emergency, after a summer, the hottest on record, in which fires have devastated almost 400,000 hectares in Spain. For this reason, he reiterated our country's commitment to work together with the rest of the European partners to present an NDC aligned with science that will enable us to achieve the objective of a 90% reduction in emissions by 2040. "We must continue to make decisive progress, and not go backwards," Pedro Sánchez stressed.

The President of the Government of Spain also explained that Spain's climate action is structured into three priority areas. The first is to make progress in the area of financing, along the lines set by the IV Conference on Financing for Development held this summer in Seville. Secondly, combating climate disinformation, for which Spain will join the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change.

"Disinformation not only creates confusion and spreads fake news; in the area of the climate emergency, it also puts lives and property at risk. Climate misinformation kills," the president explained. The third key area is improving systems for preventing and responding to extreme weather events, as outlined in the State Pact to tackle the Climate Emergency that the government is promoting at the national level.

"Fighting the climate emergency is not an abstract idea," concluded the president, "it is about protecting our homes, our jobs and our way of life".
