Rep. Clyde Fights for Lawrenceville Post Office Relocation in FY27 Appropriations Process

WASHINGTON, D.C. - This week, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) secured language urging the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to coordinate with the City of Lawrenceville to relocate its downtown post office through the ongoing Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) appropriations process.

On April 22nd, the House Appropriations Committee approved the FY27 Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) appropriations bill by a vote of 34-28. Due to Rep. Clyde's efforts, the bill report includes the following language:

Lawrenceville Post Office Relocation - The Committee is concerned with the United States Postal Service's refusal to cooperate with the city of Lawrenceville in its efforts to relocate the post office located at 121 E Crogan St, Lawrenceville, GA 30046, to a more suitable location. The location places significant strain on the one-way street where it is located, creating congestion and limiting accessibility to not only the post office branch itself, but also to surrounding businesses. The Committee understands that the city has indicated a willingness to take measures aimed at reducing or eliminating cost burdens on the USPS in identifying, purchasing, constructing, and equipping a new facility. The Committee urges USPS to coordinate with the city in identifying a more beneficial location for this post office and in finding methods to facilitate a move at the lowest possible cost to the USPS.

"The U.S. Postal Service's lack of coordination with the City of Lawrenceville and disregard for the local community's needs are completely unacceptable," said Clyde. "Last week, I committed to help Mayor Still and City Manager Warbington with this deeply frustrating matter. This report language marks an effective first step as we work toward securing a beneficial relocation from the USPS. I will continue using every tool at my disposal to advocate on behalf of and obtain meaningful wins for folks throughout the Ninth District."

"Over the past several years, the City of Lawrenceville has invested heavily in redevelopment projects in downtown Lawrenceville aimed to revitalize the area, improving walkability, and enhancing the overall experience for the community," said Mayor David Still. "The City is fully committed to working with the United States Postal Service in identifying and supporting a suitable relocation solution in downtown Lawrenceville that serves both operational efficiency and community interests."

Background

For years, the City of Lawrenceville has attempted to work with the USPS to relocate its downtown post office to a more suitable location, but those efforts have been repeatedly stonewalled by the Postal Service.

The current facility, located in the city center, is both inconvenient and an eyesore for residents. Since the post office serves both retail and distribution functions, the resulting traffic on its one-way street has created significant congestion and ongoing inconvenience for residents and surrounding local businesses. Meanwhile, downtown Lawrenceville has seen significant economic development in recent years, with more than $100 million in city investment in revitalization projects.

The city is prepared to do the necessary work to identify a nearby alternative site and is willing to fund relocation and construction costs. However, since discussions broke down in 2024, there has been no progress on the initiative. Despite repeated requests, the USPS continues to refuse further conversations on relocation efforts.

Last week, Congressman Clyde held a productive conversation with Lawrenceville Mayor David Still and City Manager Chuck Warbington. During the meeting, Rep. Clyde committed to take action on the matter through his work in Congress. Less than one week later, the Congressman drafted and secured language pertaining to the relocation of the East Crogan Street post office in the FY27 FGSS appropriations bill.

The FY27 FSGG appropriations bill will now head to the House floor. Additional resources on the Committee's legislative activity on this annual spending bill are available HERE.
