Beavers fend off Seawolves' upset bid in Corvallis

Corvallis, Oregon (Dec. 7) - Sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison scored 15 points and center Lillee Duffin grabbed 11 rebounds Sunday as the UAA women's basketball team lost 69-53 to Oregon State at Gill Coliseum.

The Seawolves - who counted the game as an exhibition - also got 13 points from senior guard Elaina Mack, playing their Div. I hosts to a 34-34 tie at halftime and keeping it a two-possession game until the 5-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

The Beavers (6-4) were led by 23 points, six rebounds and five assists from guard Tiara Bolden, utilizing a 62-31 rebounding advantage to avoid the upset.

"This road trip didn't necessarily produce the results we wanted, but I'm proud of our team for the fight they showed today, especially on a quick turnaround," said UAA head coach Matt Thune, whose squad played its third game in four days. "We had some good conversations the last 24 hours, and they took it to heart. When we play our brand of basketball we can play with anyone."

Ranked No. 16 in NCAA Div. II but coming off consecutive losses in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference openers, the Seawolves showed no signs of wear in the first half against the Beavers.

Mack hit a pair of first-half three-pointers, including one to go up 13-10 midway through the opening quarter, and Kimberly Carrada Sanchez nailed a trey just before the buzzer to give UAA a 24-18 lead.

Mack swished a turnaround jumper with 4:34 remaining in the second quarter to push the Seawolves' largest lead to 34-27, before the Beavers finished on a 7-0 run for the halftime tie.

UAA stayed even for the first three minutes of the third quarter before OSU grabbed the lead for good, 38-36, on a Bolden basket at the 6:46 mark.

Despite trailing 52-42 after three quarters, the Seawolves got within 54-50 on five straight points from Mack. The momentum would not last, however, as the Beavers scored the next 15 points to pull away.

Carrada Sanchez finished with nine points and Anderson had eight points, while Duffin added five points and four steals.

The Seawolves got a 10-day rest before playing a pair of games at the Hoops In Hawaii Classic, Dec. 18-20 in Honolulu. Find free video and live stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
