Our response to the Expert Academic Panel on Neurodiversity Report

The Government has today published the Expert Academic Panel on Neurodiversity's Report and Recommendations, which set out how best to support neurodivergent employees to succeed at work.

Our full comment in response to the report is included below.

Our comment

Joey Nettleton Burrows, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the National Autistic Society, said:

"We welcome the findings of this report, which highlight the clear advantages of creating neuroinclusive workplaces and the benefits for both employers and employees that tailored support can bring.

"Only 3 in 10 working age autistic people in the UK are in employment, amongst the lowest for any disability. A lack of autism understanding, discrimination, and poor support are just some of the many barriers currently faced by autistic people.

"The report rightly recognises that each autistic person is different and that support should be tailored to individual needs. However, without clear motivation for employers to put these recommendations into practice, there is a risk that they won't be implemented effectively across the country.

"The Government must work with employers, and autistic people, to transform these findings into action. Doing so could make a significant impact on reducing the autism employment gap, giving more autistic people the opportunity to unlock their potential and to thrive in the workplace."
