UPDATE: 1 lane of E. Jefferson to remain open in each direction during water main repairs; work expected to last until mid-week

  • DPD and DPW Traffic Management will be on site Monday during peak travel times to help keep E. Jefferson traffic flowing
  • Motorists advised to budget additional travel time or to seek alternate route
  • Due to system redundancy, no homes or businesses reporting water outage and none have reported flooding issues.

The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) will begin active construction Monday morning to repair a 42-inch water main that ruptured last night on E. Jefferson near Burns. Crews responded immediately early Sunday morning to shut off the main and to begin preparing for repairs.

Currently and during the construction process, one lane of E. Jefferson will remain open in each direction, but bike lanes at the repair location will be inaccessible. It is currently estimated that repairs will be completed and the road re-open around the middle of the week. In the meantime, motorists are advised to budget additional time for their commute and/or to seek an alternate route to avoid potential backups.

The Detroit Police Department and Department of Public Works will have personnel on site to help manage traffic flow at the site of the partial closure.

Currently:

  • Water service status: Due to the redundancy in the water system, all residents in the area should have water service. If any residents in the area do not have water service, please call DWSD at (313) 267-8000.
  • Boil water advisory: No boil water advisory has been issued at this time.
  • Localized street flooding: There are no issues at this time. DWSD had ensured that catch basin in the area are clear and taking water properly.

DWSD will continue to monitor system conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.
