The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted on January 22, 2025, to reduce from $25 to zero the annual licensing fee for motor vehicles, motorcycles and trucks located in the county. The change follows a recommendation the Loudoun County Treasurer's office made in October. The Board approved the amendment to Chapter 852 of the Codified Ordinances of Loudoun County effective January 1, 2025, which reduces the license fee on vehicles garaged within the county, including within any incorporated town that does not impose its own vehicle license fee.
The change does not apply to vehicles garaged within any incorporated town that levies its own vehicle license fee.
The Loudoun County Treasurer's office currently collects the licensing fee on behalf of incorporated towns and will continue to do so for towns that continue to levy this fee.
During its January 7, 2025, fund balance discussion (PDF), the Board did, however, create a grant-in-aid program for incorporated towns that also vote to reduce their vehicle license fee for the 2025 tax year to zero.
For Fiscal Year 2025, the anticipated impact is a loss of $7.8 million in budgeted county revenue.
