Gyms at Shelby and Easley Community Centers Closed

Metro Parks has closed two gymnasiums and a portion of a facility that was once a gym due to safety issues. Structural issues at Shelby Park Community Center, Easley Community Center and an area in the Centennial Performing Arts Center are closed to the public at the recommendation of structural engineers who found delaminating and cracking Glu lam beams. We've paid very close attention to Shelby, Easley, and an area in the Performing Arts Center because those gymnasiums, which were built in the 60's, have gym construction similar to West Park Community Center.

It is important to note that only the gyms are closed at Shelby and Easley Community Centers. Parks staff are working to relocate those gym activities impacted by the closures. The closures are a precautionary measure to protect our most valued asset - our users. We are aware that the closure of these three facilities may inconvenience some of our users, the safety of our patrons is our most important priority. We have no reopening dates for the gyms as of yet.
