Languages bring us closer together - Newcastle Poetry Slam

The EU Delegation to the UK was proud to support an engaging Multilingual Poetry Slam at the Express Yourself - North East Festival of Languages, held at Newcastle Civic Centre.

Bringing together over 100 students aged 11-18 from across the North East, the event invited young people to write, perform and celebrate poetry in multiple languages: from those learned in the classroom to those spoken at home. Guided by poet Michaël Vidon and a talented team of spoken word artists, students explored creative expression through interactive workshops.

The day concluded with live performances in the Council Chamber, where students showcased their multilingual poems to peers, teachers and judges.

Through creativity, teamwork and performance, students demonstrated that languages are not just skills, but powerful bridges between cultures and communities.

For the EU, language learning remains a key priority in promoting intercultural understanding, helping people connect across borders and better understand one another.

Well done to all the students, artists and partners involved for showing how languages can inspire, bring people together and give young people a voice.
