A majority of Texas voters support at least some access to abortion between the first 6 weeks to at any time during the pregnancy. The passage of San Antonio Reproductive Justice Fund reflects the desires of most Texans and was won through persistent advocacy by community members and their organizations. Using the courts to impede this democratically passed funding, undermines democracy, is a waste of taxpayers dollars, and is yet another attack from the State of Texas on reproductive freedom. Texas already has some of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the nation, and Paxton's use of the courts seeks to intimidate democratically elected officials from listening to their constituents, thus making it even more difficult for people seeking life-saving reproductive care.
Three Texas women have already died since abortion was all but effectively banned in Texas. Sepsis is on the rise. As a result of statewide repression, local governments have stepped in to fill the reproductive needs of their constituents. The San Antonio Reproductive Justice Fund was created in response to relentless attacks from people like Paxton and Greg Abbott. It aims to fill in the gaps for people who need access to life-saving reproductive healthcare. We are in solidarity with the Avowed Texas, Jane's Due Process, Lilith Fund, and Sueños Sin Fronteras on their successful work to expand the San Antonio Reproductive Justice Fund.
The San Antonio Chapter of the NLG is ready to fight for abortion rights, and support our comrades in the movement for reproductive justice.
